At MyDoctor, we offer two well‑known options: finasteride, a daily tablet for men, and minoxidil, a topical treatment for men and women. Your GP will talk through what each option involves so you can decide what feels right for you.
Finasteride for men
Finasteride is a daily tablet used to treat male pattern hair loss. It works by reducing a hormone that can make hair follicles shrink over time. Hair follicles are the tiny openings in your skin where hair grows. By lowering this hormone, finasteride helps with slowing shedding and supporting regrowth. Finasteride is prescribed for adult men. It is not recommended for women, especially during pregnancy, as it can affect hormone levels and may harm an unborn baby. Most men start to notice changes after a few months of consistent use, with results often becoming clearer over the first year. Your GP will guide you on what to expect and how to get the best outcome from treatment.
Minoxidil for men and women
Minoxidil is a topical treatment that can be used by both men and women to help slow hair thinning and encourage regrowth. It works by improving blood flow to the scalp, which supports healthier, stronger hair over time. Results can take a few months, and consistency is important for the best outcome. Your GP will guide you on the right strength for your needs, how to apply it and how long you may need to use it to notice changes.
